My daughter and I went to visit family yesterday. While on our drive we saw icicles hanging from the mountainsides. Couldn't resist stopping and photographing them to share as my day 6, 365 photo challenge.

Spotted this American Kestrel today while out running errands in town. My daughter and I had to follow its flight a bit to get the shot above. Sorry about the distance... even with my 70- 300 mm lens it was a stretch. She was a beauty though. Couldn't resist sharing her as my day five 365 photo challenge. A fallen tree stump resides along the roadside with these puffballs on top. I decided to use them as a jump start for re-joining my blog. This photo will be the first of my 365 photo challenge. It's my plan to take a photo a day using nature & wildlife as my theme. I will also try to take one video a day of something in nature and share that on my YouTube channel. Circled Openings

Tuesday I needled my way around the nature preserve's pond of screaming frogs protesting my presence and entered the woods. There a red bellied woodpecker foraging for food posed for my camera.  I can hear what sounds like an owl on the other side of the woods whoing. Five turkey vultures above head circle in and out for something only they see. I continue walking around seeing trees and bushes blooming green. Robins hide in the thick of briars and bush flitting anxiously from one log to another as I pass. Upon a new path is a thick bush with sunlight passing through it's circled openings. When I leave I spot a northern flicker searching the ground for food. The bathroom holds a few surprises of its own. There's a wasp sitting along the toilet lid who allows me to take him on a white carpet ride outside. He flies into the sunlit afternoon after a small pause. Ladybugs have filled the skylight in the bathroom as well as other spaces but I don't disturb them.

A Lone Starling

Thursday evening we came home to find a lone starling inside our basketball goal base. We could hear her flitting around inside and occasionally we saw her poke her beak outside the opening. It wasn't until we turned the goal upside down over a center block that she was able to reach the opening without trouble and fly out. What a great feeling it was for my hubby and I to save that lone starling from certain death. We found out later from our daughter that she had heard it flitting around that same morning but didn't know what it was. So, I'm guessing she was in there all day Thursday before her rescue. Have you ever been able to rescue wildlife from certain death? Please share your experiences in the comments below.

Morning sky was sunny and then grey as we continued down the steel grey highway. Hawks, breasts full, sitting at tips of trees. A wild turkey passing in front of our windshield. Teasels letting slip the fawn scavenging wintered earth for food. Unblinking the fawn stood and watched me, watching him/ her. A raised right foot as if readying itself to sprint off into the thick of woods. Driving away I turn to see the fawn watching before running into the safety of it's home.

Pictured above is a opossum I captured on 11.3.02. He had a bad back-right leg but was able to book it across the field/ woods where my husband and I had let him go- only minutes from our home. This morning my daughter comes running back inside the house to let me know I had to get my camera. There's a opossum in the field beside our house. After putting another layer of clothes on I grabbed my camera and began taking pictures. As I watched this guy move across the cold snow I noticed his bad back-right leg. I would venture to say this is the same opossum we released over 11 yrs ago. The only thing that stops me from believing it completely is a opossum's lifespan is about 4 yrs. Does anyone know what the lifespan of a opossum really is? Here's the pics from this morning's shoot...




Look at that long tooth. He appears to be in good health other than injuries to his left eye and ear from a fight I'm sure he's won. He actually let my daughter and I stand about 2 ft in front of him. What a blessing to photograph him in the morning's light when he's supposed to be nocturnal...

The great horned owl who came with Templeton to the bow weekend workshop. Albert had part of his wing amputated because he was tangled in, if I remember correctly, some wire. He'll never be re-released into nature again because he can't fly. He has a new home at Salato Wildlife Center and seems to be adjusting well to his new enclosure. He weighs about 2, 2 1/2 pounds and loves to eat mice. His talons can lock onto its prey at 500 pounds... ouch! Isn't he a beauty??
