Nature Preserve

Saturday morning stretches into late afternoon with woodpeckers flitting from one bare tree to another. They're hammering echoes across still waters while sounding their presence. Fallen trees become balance beams for my feet to maneuver like a gymnast as I make way along the water's edge.  My eyes squint against the sun to find two red tailed hawks screeching above my head.  They're circling February's blue sky. After watching the hawks fly away I continue walking.  Alongside the green-brown waters snatching briars vie for my attention temporarily holding me in their tiny fingers. Gently, I release myself from their hold.

Well my goodness. If it were me, I'd have to rewrite part of your Saturday adventure. After your sentence: "Fallen trees become balance beams for my feet to maneuver like a gymnast as I make way along the water's edge."

I'd write:

"Ker-SPLASH !!!

"Wiping water from my eyes with a brown jacket sleeve like a wet dog, I squint against the sun to find two red-tailed hawks screeching with laughter above my head ... "

Sounds like you had a satisfyingly relaxing adventure under glorious blue skies and warm winter sun. Great photo, too! :-)

Wonderful, both the photo with the dead tree reaching towards heaven, and the prose which takes us along.

Lovely scenario you painted with your words. I experienced the viewing of a hawk circling in a blue sky also this past week.

I was drawn into the writing...very descriptive! I like CountryDreaming's comment and I would probably have been in the water with her :-)
