Red winged blackbird

This red winged blackbird was gracious enough to pose on a small cattail at our local nature preserve. I think he was flirting with the lady red wing flying around the pond's edge.

I leave momma bird & her mate to their protesting as I continue walking along the pond's edge. At the other end I see frogs springing across the water like skipping stones... screaming. They tuck themselves safely beneath the water's surface so I can no longer see them. Only one green frog sits beside the water. It's body half clothed in mud. It allows me to step closer, closer still. When I've over stepped my boundaries he too flounces. Hidden loosely behind some weeds he allows me one snapshot before bounding off into the thick cattails.

Willow

Mourning willow
Your tepid tears
Stain the earth
While tranquil clouds
Pass the threadbare field
Bestowing nature's sunlight
Upon your
Familiar weeping skin
Unburden your salty leaves
Evermore bathed in
Friendless sanction
A solitary forest
Without foreign tongued dialect
Playing on the edge of weighted consciousness
A season in repose.

My poem is an old one made from an online magnetic poetry kit. The willow/ pond is something I pass on my way to town. The picture and poem were borrowed from my first blog in order to share an update about the willow.

About a week and a half ago we had a severe storm pass through. It wasn't until the next day that hubby went to work and seen the willow had been felled by a lightning strike or blown by heavy winds.

Great Blue Skimmer

I've made my way through Queen Anne's Lace (wild carrots) to pond's edge where sweat bees sting my legs with great persistence. I watch as frogs jump across the water's surface like a skipping stone before they disappear into darkness. The sun's beading down on my head when I see a great blue skimmer perched on a reed. He submits himself to the sun and surrounding quietness for only a moment before flitting off to another reed.

Note: Image is sooc (straight out of camera) with the exception of some cropping.

Quietude

COM
Heat. It stifles the air's circulation as sweat glides into quiet, dark places on my skin. Chiggers have already made their new home on my legs. A receding sun illuminates ornamental grass standing four feet tall. These blossomed clumps of grass are entangled in a spider's web.

I've already passed berries on a strong vine and can hear frogs jumping into the pond. I've spotted deer and other wildlife tracks along the way. When I circle past the energy path I spot a female red-winged blackbird and a deer crossing the meadow.

The female bird is playing a game of hide-n-seek among the cattails while the doe forages for food at pond's end. It's with baited breath I stand among them, watching in their quietude.
