Two mallard ducks at our local lake today. I think the male may have been trying to court the female as they stayed close to one another. At one point the female was submerged beneath the male... then they simply swam away but before they did I snapped the photo above for Nature Notes.
Mallards pair up in fall and winter. They mate on the water and that is why you saw the female go under. Before breeding in the spring, mating is for pair bonding.. like people I guess.. Nice to see you in Nature Notes Michelle...

I think you are right about the male courting the female.
Great capture of the Mallards.. The female will have a lot of attention, maybe too much! Have a happy day!
