Baby Raccoons

Before I tell the story behind these adorable baby raccoons. I'd like to say thank you to everyone for their understanding & support about my anemic state. I'm feeling much better now that the iron pill is boosting my blood. I thought today would be as good a day to dip my typing fingers back into the blogosphere as any. I'll do my very best to make it by everyone's blog each day but if I don't please understand I'm still in the recovery processes. Thanks again to everyone for their well wishes.

I took these baby raccoon pictures early last month on our way back home from the mountains. It was early evening when the sun was setting and the wind was growing colder. We were discussing the events of the day when I spotted something in the road. When I looked I saw three baby raccoons working up the courage to walk into the road where their sibling had passed away.

When we turned around for a closer look the mother was nowhere to be found. So, we stepped out of the car inching our way closer to these adorable little creatures. It was our first time seeing baby raccoons.

My daughter took the initiative to move the deceased coon off the road as I snapped some pictures. We watched & listened carefully for the mother's return. When she didn't make her appearance we turned to ask the locals who'd stopped to help if they knew of anyone who would relocate them. They called the wildlife rescue first but they declined (can you believe that?) Then they called an old man who did this for a living. He came within 30 minutes of us calling.

He got right down to business by placing a trap next to them and proceeded to pick them up one at a time, placing them inside. Two of the three surviving babies would get a new home on a farm, some warm bedding for the night and a safe place to grow.  Whereas the third baby raccoon scurried away from being rescued. He/ she made its way up the mountainside, away from the road. All in all I'd say the rescue went well. None of them had to suffer the ill fate their fourth sibling met.

I'm so glad that the babies were able to be rescued and hopefully the one that went off found a safe place. They are adorable.

Poor little things. Most people think of raccoons as a nuisance but I don't. They are living creatures who deserve our respect, and our compassion. God bless you and the gentle man for rescuing them. Love your blog, btw, and thanks for visiting mine today!

I'm pleased the pills are kicking in ...

Just such an amazing story, Naquillity. What fortunate cubs they were to have you and your family come along. I know they can do damage, but I love these animals!

WONDERFUL photos!

carver good morning~ i was glad they were able to be rescued to. i didn't have the heart to leave them beside the road to get killed like their sibling. i'm guessing that one found a safe place on the side of the mountain so it could live a long life too. the only thing i hated was the fact the two siblings being separated from the other. i thought they were adorable too.

giraffe head tree i think raccoons are precious. i've never had a problem with them but have heard they're nuisances. i like to think they're curious. i'm pleased i could rescue them with the help of the others. i really like your blog too. and, thanks for stopping by for a visit. hope to see you again soon.

mary yes, it's hard to know what to do sometimes. but, i'm pleased we could do some little something.

caroline thanks. i'm pleased we came along when we did too. i'm sure the other three wouldn't have made it through the night without our help. you can't help but love them... they're adorable.

thanks everyone for stopping by and leaving your comments. it's greatly appreciated. hope everyone has a great day.

Your post reminded me that you shouldn't throw fruit (apple cores) out the car window. Raccoons and other animals get hit while trying to eat the free stuff. Also, I wouldn't have been brave enough to get too close to them. Raccoons harbor rabies in our area so I keep clear of them. Still, your photos show how cute they are.

The raccoons were so cute, glad you felt compelled to help them. We often have baby raccoons come out of the woods and scale the trees in the yard...of course the steal the apples from the trees in the field, but they are too cute to be angry with!

Glad you are feeling better and thank you so much for the nice comment you left for me! So appreciated it!

appalachian lady thanks for the reminder about not throwing out food. i never do it myself but certainly have seen others doing it all the time. i make a point to have a bag in my car for garbage and empty it appropriately. i find myself getting braver about approaching wild animals but still with some caution. i don't want to get them hurt or myself. glad you're enjoying the pics.

wanda i'll bet that's the sweetest sight watching those raccoons stealing the apples from the trees. you're right they're are to cute to be angry with. i am feeling better but still have some more tests to do which means i have to go off my iron pill for a week, sigh...

thanks everyone for all your comments. it's greatly appreciated.
